CROATOAN
The only word left behind by the missing settlers
In 1587, a group of English settlers led by John White arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of present-day North Carolina. After a difficult start, White returned to England for supplies, leaving 115 colonists behind.
When he returned in 1590, he found the colony deserted. There were no signs of struggle, only the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post.
Some believe the settlers integrated with the Croatoan Native American tribe, while others suspect disease, starvation, or an attack. Despite many theories, no conclusive evidence has been found.
The mystery of Roanoke remains unsolved, highlighting the challenges of early colonization and how history can sometimes leave us with more questions than answers.
