Highlights
  • The Great Fire of London was one of the most destructive fires in British history. It destroyed much of the city but also led to important changes in urban planning and fire safety.

London was, but is no more.

John Evelyn, 1666

On September 2, 1666, a fire broke out in a bakery on Pudding Lane. The flames spread quickly due to wooden buildings and strong winds.

Within days, most of London was in ruins, including 13,000 homes and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Despite the destruction, the fire killed fewer people than expected.

Afterward, London was rebuilt with wider streets and stronger brick buildings. The disaster also led to the creation of a more organized fire brigade.

The Great Fire of London taught the importance of better city planning and fire prevention, shaping modern urban safety regulations.
